Upon purchasing a dedicated server and after your account has been configured, you will need to log into your account to complete the setup process and start using the server. While this varies from each hosting service provider, most servers are setup in a similar fashion.
The Control Panel
This is your point of access to your dedicated server that allows you to manage, update, and configure your server. Various types of control panel software are available, so it’s a good idea to opt for a user-friendly control panel when starting out.
There is a good chance your service provider recommends a control panel for using with their dedicated server, espiecally when renting as part of a hosting package. Many even offer video tutorials for getting started, so be sure check for this too.
Creating an Account
Once you know what control panel to use, you’’ need to create an account that includes a user ID and a strong password. These are important as they will provide you with access to the server any time you log in to the control panel.
Remember, it’s important to create a very strong password that is at least eight characters long, features lower and uppercase letters, along with at least one number and special character. Never use a real word or any personal information when creating a password.
Network Configuration
One of the most important configurations to start with is to allow network connectivity. This is done once the server receives an IP address and a host name, and it’s often good to use a static IP for easier navigation for your clients.
Download Necessary Applications
Once you are familiar with your control panel, it’s time to add necessary applications for your projects. This depends entirely on the individual business, so you should already have an idea of the require applications, as this is usually taken into account when deciding on operating system, control panel, bandwidth, database system prior to hiring the server.
Update Everything
After downloading all the required applications and software, you should take the time to update everything with the latest production releases for a secure and safe server. At this stage, it’s a good idea to setup automatic updates for smoother maintenance down the line.
